Isaiah Nursery & Primary School now has 190 pupils! Please continue to support this wonderful school…
Isaiah Nursery & Primary School opened on 3 February 2019. 190 children are now enjoying a much-needed education (many for the very first time). Phase 1 of the build was completed on time, and the school opened with four classroom blocks and toilets, school furniture and equipment, teachers’ accommodation, a school kitchen, and a water tank. This was afforded by just over £11,000 raised through fundraising, the charity’s reserves of £8,000, and the trustees’ commitment of £13,000.
Further work (Phase 2) was carried out soon after at a total cost of £4,402. Phase 2 included a caretaker’s hut, school gates, and solar panels for the school and teachers’ accommodation. School uniforms were donated by Claygate Primary School, UK.
Head Teacher, Denis Muhwezi, leads five qualified teachers, who teach a wide range of subjects, including English, throughout the primary school. Children follow the national syllabus, take external exams, play sport, and also learn important life skills, such as cooking, science, and taking care of their health (all pupils recently had their measles vaccination).
Denis manages the school budget and identifies the poorest pupils who need reduced fees. Children attend weekly Christian services, and the nursery building serves as a church on Sundays under the leadership of Reverend Stuart Amanya (Church of Uganda).
Isaiah Nursery & Primary School is now stable and growing, with rising education standards (it received a good report from the external School Inspectors). Fees will slightly increase next year for families who can pay, to balance the reduced fees or no fees for those who cannot.
Our key objective next year is to provide sustainable education to even more of the poorest children in the local area. This means training more teachers, building more classrooms, and raising more funds (we are rapidly running out of classroom space!). Plans are in discussion for Phase 3 of the build, which includes three new classrooms, extra teachers’ accommodation and more toilets.
Thank you to all of you who have supported our New Primary School Appeal through prayers and donations. We are especially thankful for the support of Holy Trinity Claygate’s wonderful congregation.
For the foreseeable future, Isaiah Nursery & Primary School will need support with its running costs. We have so many children from impoverished families, and the school needs time to establish itself.
“Isaiah Nursery & Primary School is a major step forward in this community’s development and transformation. Thank God that we can now give many more of Katete’s poorest children access to education, in a safe, dry environment. God Bless.” Revd Prof Linda Morgan (Chair of Trustees)
